Corvette assembly moved to a renovated facility in St. Louis, Missouri, where production started in December 1953. Chevrolet had projected annual sales would exceed 10,000, but this proved much too optimistic as just 3,640 1954 Corvettes were built and nearly a third of those were unsold on Chevrolet dealer lots at the end of 1954.
A mid-year camshaft change increased the six-cylinder engine's horsepower from 150 to 155. A beige interior and at least three new exterior colors were added. Available production records for 1954 are incomplete. Estimates of exterior colors based on owner surveys suggest that about 300 were Pennant Blue, 100 were Sportsman Red, four were Black, and the remainder were Polo White. All soft tops are thought to have been beige, but even that is disputed.
