The 1956 Corvette body was all-new, and included roll-up glass windows with optional power assists. Interiors were limited to red or beige, but six exterior colors were available. Exteriors could be ordered in two-tones with a contrasting color in the side "cove,"" a first for Corvette. Engines included a base 210-hp V8, a 225-hp V8 with dual carburetion, and a dual-carb engine with special camshaft (sometimes rated at 240-hp). Seat belts were available for the first time in a Corvette as dealer-installed options. A handsome removable hardtop was also optional.
Dr. Dick Thompson and his Corvette won the SCCA Class C-production racing title. Total 1956 production was 3,467. Chevrolet records indicate that 1956's most popular exterior color was Venetian Red with 1,043 built. A total of 1,259 cars were two-toned. Venetian Red with beige cove (431) was the most poplar two-tone. The rarest two-tone was Polo White with silver cove with a quantity of just 120.
