1960 Chevrolet Corvette

Contributed by Mike Antonick, Editor "Corvette Black Book"

The 1960 Corvette was the first with an aluminum radiator (limited to high-lift camshaft engines), the last to have taillights formed into the rounded rear fenders, and the first to exclude the combination of automatic transmission and fuel-injected engine. Printed material of the era indicated that 275-hp and 315-hp fuel-injected engines with aluminum heads were available, but it is believed none were delivered on production cars to retail customers. Casting problems with the high-silicon aluminum led to early cancellation of the heads, though some were produced and supplied to Briggs Cunningham for his LeMans effort. A Corvette in the Briggs Cunningham team finished eighth overall in the GT class at the 24-hours of Le Mans. Ferrari competed well in SCCA Class B-production but finished second to Bob Johnson and his Corvette. 1960's production of 10,261 was the first to reach five figures.
