The 1961 had new rear styling, the first with a four taillight look that evolved into a Corvette tradition. It was the last to offer two-tone paint treatment (until 1978's Indy Pace replica and Silver Anniversary models) and the last with 283-cid engines. It was the first with exhaust exits below the body (instead of through a body panel or bumper) and the first Corvette V8 with radiator expansion tanks. Ermine White was the most popular exterior color at 3,178 units. Sateen Silver was the rarest exterior at 747, followed closely by Jewell Blue's 855. Overall production edged up to 10,939. In SCCA Class B-production, Dr. Dick Thompson won the points championship with Corvette.
