The 1963 Corvette featured a new chassis, including independent rear suspension with a transverse leaf spring, and a new body design, available for the first time in both coupe and convertible styles. For this year only, coupe s had a body-color section dividing the rear window. The second genuine Corvette milestone , the 1963 was a terrific success with total sales of 21,513. Demand exceeded supply and many buyers waited several months for delivery. Knock-off wheels were optional and appeared on show cars and in brochures, but probably were available only over-the-counter due to leak problems. Air conditioning and leather seats (saddle color only) were available for the first time. Special racing package RPO Z06 initially included a 36-gallon fuel tank and was limited to coupes. Later, Z06 was available with convertibles and standard fuel tanks. Despite the significant Corvette chassis improvements, Carroll Shelby's Ford-powered Cobra also debuted in late 1962 and its superior power-to-weight ratio enabled it to dethrone the Corvette in SCCA racing. Five factory lightweight Corvette racers called Grand Sports were built. All are in private hands today.
