Big block engines made their Corvette appearance as RPO L78 with 396-cid and 425-hp, and s with this engine were fitted with distinctive hoods. This was the first time in Corvette history that an engine option dictated a separate exterior body panel. It was the last year for first-generation fuel injection introduced in 1957. Four-wheel disc brakes were included in the Corvette's base price, but 316 drum-brake 1965s were built as a delete-cost ($64.50) option while supplies lasted. Options first available included side-mount exhausts, teakwood steering wheels, telescopic steering columns, and goldwall tires. Optional knock-off wheels were similar to the previous year, except the surface between fins was painted dark grey. Sales totaled 23,564. A new exterior color, Nassau Blue, was far and away the most popular with 6,022 units. The rarest exterior was Tuxedo Black with 1,191.
