Displacement of optional big block engines increased to 427-cid, and s with this engine had the distinctive hood first included with 1965's 396. The 427-cid engine was initially rated at 450-hp, but was later reduced to 425-hp. This was a management decision not related to any change in the engine itself. It was the first year of availability for seat headrests and shoulder harnesses. It was the last for optional knock-off wheels, which in 1966 had brush-finish center cones instead of bright. Seats had additional pleats to reduce seam splitting. Backup lights became standard equipment. As in 1965, Nassau Blue was the best selling exterior at 6,100, and Tuxedo Black was rarest at 1,190. Overall sales of 27,720 were the highest in the Corvette's history to that time.
