Alarm systems, optional on some earlier Corvettes, were standard for the 1972 model. This was the last year for a removable rear window in coupes and the last with chrome front and rear bumpers. Power ratings for all engines were reduced due to a change in measurement technique. Instead of "gross," ratings became a more realistic "net,"" which included losses from accessories, air cleaners, and mufflers. LT1 engines, which had solid valve lifters, could be combined with air conditioning in 1972, the only year for the LT1 and air combination. A solid-lifter engine can turn higher RPMs and possibly throw an air conditioning belt, thus Chevrolet's reluctance to combine these features. Sales rose to 27,004. In a true sign of the times, the best-selling exterior color was Ontario Orange with 4,891 units. Lowest was Pewter Silver with 1,372. Corvette won the IMSA GT manufacturer's championship.
