1973 Chevrolet Corvette

Contributed by Mike Antonick, Editor "Corvette Black Book"

This model is easily recognized by its body-color front bumper system combined with chrome rear bumpers. The change in front was dictated by federal 5-mph damage requirements. The 1973's hood extended over the windshield wipers, eliminating the separate, lifting wiper panel used from 1968 to 1972. All 1973 Corvettes had horizontal metal supports inside their doors for increased side impact protection. RPO YJ8 Aluminum Wheels were offered initially, but Chevrolet rejected the vendor-supplied wheels due to porosity problems early in production. Sales records show four sets sold to retail customers, though more are known to exist. The RPO Z07 Off Road Suspension and Brake Package was installed on just 45 cars. Corvette led the 12-Hours of Sebring before retiring, and led the Daytona Continental to finish 2nd overall. Sales reached 30,464, with 4,943 of those convertibles.
