The convertible was gone, but that didn't stop 46,558 people from purchasing 1976 Corvette T-top coupe models. Aluminum wheels were genuinely available after 1973's false start, and 6,253 sets found their way onto 1976 models. Unlike the five-wheel sets of the mid-year second-generation, 1976's wheel option (RPO YJ8) included four aluminum road wheels, but a steel spare. A steel underpan was added for body rigidity and heat isolation. The heat isolation issue was driven by intentionally higher engine temperatures for greater efficiency, and catalytic converter-generated heat. This was the first Corvette with in-glass heating elements in the rear window defogger, instead of forced air. Corvette won 1976 SCCA championships in A- and B-production.
