Corvettes were big news in 1978, the model's twenty-fifth year. Silver anniversary paint schemes, and "pace car"" replicas of the car used to pace the 1978 Indianapolis 500 race were offered. The replicas were black over silver and had separate vehicle identification number sequencing. A buying frenzy prior to the race boosted pace car prices to double their $13,653.21 base sticker, but this speculative bubble burst following the 1978 race. Redesigned elements for all 1978 models included a fixed fastback rear window design, and a new instrument panel with a conventional glovebox. Sales were 46,776, including 15,283 with silver anniversary paint (1978's most popular exterior), and 6,502 pace car replicas. Corvettes won the SCCA Trans-Am Series Category II championship as well as the A- and B-production, and B-stock, B-prepared and B-stock ladies Solo II national championships. Also, Corvette won IMSA's AAGT manufacturer's title.
