New seat designs, first seen with 1978's pace car model, were standard equipment. Extensive use of plastic in the seat frame structure reduced weight by about twelve pounds per seat. These seats had better lateral support and their backs folded at a higher level to permit easier access to the rear storage compartment. Front and rear spoilers, also developed for the pace car, were optional in 1979 as RPO D80. Overall sales soared to 53,807, a record for single-year Corvette sales which still stands today. Even 1984's total, inflated because there was no 1983 model, was less. At 10,465, Black took over as top selling exterior color. Corvette Yellow's 2,357 was the rarest. Corvette won the SCCA Trans-Am Series Category I championship and national titles in B-production, B-stock, B-prepared and B-stock ladies Solo II.
