The St. Louis factory built its last Corvette on August 1, 1981. The new Bowling Green, Kentucky, facility started production June 1, so for two months both built simultaneously. This was the only time in Corvette history that plant builds overlapped. St. Louis was assigned to paint solid colors using lacquer; Bowling Green built mostly two-tones using a new enamel-type paint with clearcoats. However, it has been documented that a trial run of about 25 of each two-tone paint combination was done at St. Louis prior to production at Bowling Green to test the Bowling Green paint materials and techniques. The year's production total of 40,606 was a virtual duplicate of the previous year. Corvettes produced at the new Bowling Green facility totaled 8,995. Corvette won the SCCA Trans-Am series championship.
