This model ended the third generation (C3) that began in 1968, and the chassis design that dated to 1963. A "collector edition"" had silver-beige paint, special trim and a hatchback rear window. The hatch window was Corvette's first, but set off a trend. At $22,537.59, the collector edition was the first Corvette with a base price to exceed $20,000. Manual transmissions were not available, the first time this occurred since 1954. Sales were 25,407 including 6,759 Collector Editions. The Collector Edition's exclusive Silver/Beige exterior was the most popular, followed by White at 2,975. The rare colors were Dark Blue (562) and Bright Blue (567). Corvette was second in the SCCA Trans Am championship and won one race in the IMSA GTO class.
