Since this Corvette--the first of the fourth generation-- was behind schedule, met 1984 safety and emission standards, and because regular production was scheduled to begin after January 1, 1983, Chevrolet skipped the 1983 model year designation and introduced this mostly-new Corvette as a 1984 in March 1983. Offered only as a coupe with a single "targa" removable roof panel, it had digital instruments, an optional (no-cost) four-speed manual transmission with overdrives in the top three gears, Girlock disc brakes, single front and rear plastic leaf springs mounted transversely, and multi-adjustable cloth or leather seating.
Extraordinary cornering grip, especially when equipped with the RPO Z51 Performance Handling Package, was praised by automotive media worldwide. Body seams were hidden behind a center rub strip to eliminate all seam finishing. The rub strip also provided a perfect break for two-tone paint schemes. Corvette won the SCCA showroom stock GT national championship. The extended production run racked up final sales of 51,547 and a quarter of these (12,942) were Bright Red.
