The new RPO Z52 combined elements of RPO Z51 with softer base springs. Roller valve lifters reduced engine friction and added 5-hp. In a unique-for-Chevrolet arrangement, a Callaway twin-turbo Corvette conversion was available through some Chevy dealers as RPO B2K. Not a factory-installed option, B2K triggered a special build at the Bowling Green Corvette assembly plant before shipment to Callaway Engineering in Old Lyme, Connecticut for engine conversions. Callaway production for 1987 was 188.

The 1987 Corvette made Car and Driver's ten best automobile list showcased in the magazine's January 1987 issue. Total Corvette production was 30,632, including 10,625 convertibles. Bright Red was 1987's most preferred exterior color with 8,285. On the rare side, there were 87 painted Copper Metallic. Excluding the following year's White/Black anniversary car, this was the last fourth-generation Corvette to offer two-tone paint. The rarest of the last two-tones was 1987's White/Silver with a mere 195 sold.
