Bowling Green built 60 1989 Corvettes for the new Corvette Challenge race series, and just over 30 were converted for race use. A new ZF 6-speed manual transmission was introduced, replacing the "4+3" Doug Nash manual introduced in 1984. The RPO FX3 adjustable suspension permitted shock absorber firmness change with a console-mounted three-position switch.
The much-anticipated ZR-1 model, intended for 1989 debut, was delayed to 1990. Chevrolet did build 84 ZR-1 1989 cars for evaluation, testing, media review and photography. None were officially sold to the public. Callaway sold 67 twin-turbos. This was the last year for the digital instrument panel introduced in 1984. Although it had been planned for 1987 release, an improved tire pressure monitoring system was finally optional with 1989 models. Production totaled 26,412, including 9,749 convertibles. Bright Red was the best-selling exterior color with a volume of 7,663. Grey Metallic was rarest with 225 built.
