The appearance of the 1992 Corvette was little changed, but there were two significant technical advances. The base engine was extensively redesigned and renamed LT1. It remained 350-cid with two valves per cylinder as before, but output increased to 300-hp. Also, all 1992 Corvettes had a traction control system called Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR). It limited acceleration wheel spin with spark retard, throttle closedown and brake intervention.
New Goodyear GS-C tires were standard equipment, a Corvette exclusive for the 1992 model year. Corvette won the SCCA World Challenge manufacturer's championship for the third straight year.
Bright Red was the year's top seller with 4,466. Yellow's 678 was rarest. Overall production was 20,479, including 5,875 convertibles and 502 ZR-1s.
Enthusiasts still debate reasons for the ZR-1's dramatic sales drop. Certainly the standard LT1 engine's 300-hp, a 50- to 55-hp increase over the previous year, was a factor.
