Coupe, convertible and hardtop models had a new standard aluminum wheel design. Initially, the new wheel was painted, and the same wheel with a highly polished finish was optional. Later, a painted wheel with slightly thicker spokes from a different supplier became standard, and the thinner spoke design remained optional with the polished finish. The RPO N73 magnesium wheel option, available since 1997, was reduced from $3,000 to $2,000.

The optional Performance Handling and Selective Real Time Damping packages continued, each refined. Passive Keyless Entry--which locked and unlocked doors by proximity--was replaced by Active Keyless Entry. Seals were improved to reduce water intrusion when doors or rear hatch (coupe) were opened.

Total sales increased to 33,682, split 18,113 coupe, 13,479 convertible, and 2,090 hardtop. The high and low volume exterior colors were the same as the previous year with Torch Red's 6,700 on top, and Nassau Blue Metallic's 851 the lowest.

The Corvette C5-R factory racer won its first class victory in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Ft. Worth, Texas, driven by Ron Fellows and Andy Pilgrim.
