A new Z06 model based on the hardtop body style debuted. Power for coupes and convertibles increased to 350-hp; Z06 came with a 385-hp LS6 engine mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. Z06s also had titanium exhaust systems, Goodyear F1 Supercar tires (non-run flat) on unique wheels, and interior and exterior trim differences. C5 models were not designed with a spare tire provision, so Z06s had tire inflator kits for emergency use.
The theoretical maximum oil change interval for all models increased from 10,000 to 15,000 miles, although "real world" change recommendations were calculated by an on-board computer and were usually considerably less. A lighter, more durable battery with Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) technology was used for all models. Convertible tops were upgraded with better weather stripping and a new double-thickness twill material. Total sales were 35,627, including 15,681 coupes, 14,173 convertibles, and 5,773 Z06 hardtops. Torch Red was the best selling exterior color at 7,192, followed closely by Black with 6,971. Dark Bowling Green was the rarest with 919 built.
Corvette C5-R racers finished first and second in the GTS class (8th and 14th overall) of the 24-Hours of Le Mans.
