The sixth generation (C6) kept C5's front-engine, rear transmission layout, but was nearly all new otherwise. Length was reduced 5.1-inches and width 1.1-inches. Wheelbase increased 1.2-inches to 105.7. The engine was a new 364-cid (6.0 liter), 400-hp small block.
The 2005 returned to exposed headlights, ending a Corvette tradition started in 1963. A power top option for convertibles returned for the first time since 1962. New options for both body styles included DVD-based navigation, OnStar, XM radio, and seat-mounted side impact airbags. The previously extra-cost 6-speed manual transmission was included at no cost with 2005s. The automatic transmission was optional, but at no cost.
With a non-metallic bright red no longer available, Black took over the top sales position with 7,995. Monterey Red, not available early, was rarest with 717 units sold. Production was 26,728 coupe and 10,644 convertible, for an overall total of 37,372. Oliver Beretta and Oliver Gavin won the American LeMans Series GT1 class title in the C6-R racer.
